Identifying Products That Contain Hemp and CBD

What is Hemp and CBD?

Hemp is derived from the same plant species as cannabis, Cannabis sativa. It contains low levels of delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, and it’s used for a variety of products, including clothing, industrial goods (lotions and ropes, pet products), and food.

CBD is short for “cannabidiol”. It’s a chemical that can be found in Cannabis sativa plants and has low levels of THC. It is also used in food, tobacco products, industrial products, and vaping products.

In the U.S., both hemp and CBD are legal. Products containing either ingredient can be purchased online or in stores. For Service members, CBD and hemp products are not allowed.

How to Identify Products with Hemp or Cannabis CBD

It can be difficult to identify products that contain CBD or hemp. Here are some signs that a product could contain CBD or hemp.

Hemp or CBD products may include “CBD” or “hemp” in their product names. Some examples include “Hemp Seed”, hemp protein powder”, hemp flour”, hemp cream”, CBD Gummies”, CBD Oil”, or CBD Balm.

Some brands will use the term “CBD”, while others may use the word “hemp”.

Some products that contain hemp have a picture of a leaf on the front. Hemp leaves usually appear as multiple leaflets of varying lengths and widths on one leaf. They are typically green. CBD products can have packaging that looks like a leaf.

In the ingredient list of a product, you will find hemp or CBD. Hemp may have different names depending on the type of product, but keywords include hemp, cannabis sativa, or hempseed. Cannabidiol or hemp extract are keywords to look for when searching for CBD-containing products.

A “THC-free label” on a product is a good indicator that it contains hemp or CBD and should be avoided. CBD products can indicate that they contain less than 0.3% of THC.

You should not use or buy any product if you’re still unsure if it contains CBD or THC.
